    How to taste whisky

  1. Start with a tulip shaded glass (never a whisky tumble). This will concentrate the aroma of the spirit.
  2. Nose the whiskey two to three times
  3. Take a small sip and let the whisky coat your mouth and note what flavors you pick up
  4. Add water to the spirit to open it up and to release the oils in the dram (I add just a splash)
  5. Take a big sip and note the overall body of the spirit
  6. Move the whisky around in your mouth to pick up additional flavors
  7. Swallow and note how long the finish is
  8. Take your time and try only a few at a time and drink plenty of water between sips.

Lagavulin (Laga-Voolin)                                                                                                                                 Islay
Lagavulin 16 (a Classic Malt selection)

Glen - 98

The standard by which other Islay's are judged. An intense dram full of peat and smoke. A powerhouse that needs to be sipped slowly and enjoyed on cold nights around the fire. Lagavulin 16 has the best finish in the business, long and dry.

Jeff - 90

Massive, peat-smoke typical of southern Islay, yet with a dry finish & a hint of salt that makes up a classy package. It has a long finish with great complexity. Not for the beginner

Brett's take: 96
My desert island dram.  Peat, smoke, brine, seaweed,
a balanced sweetness to set it all off.  If I ever need a transfusion, please use this!

Available at most fine Liquor stores but becoming more rare and pricey.

Lagavulin 12  (Cask Strength)

Glen - 92

A refined dram for the true Islay connoisseur. More subtle and salty than the 16 year old and not as much of a punch in the gut.

Jeff - 91

Some smoke and saltiness, with pleasant peat-smoke. Well-balanced, leaving a sweet-peat aftertaste. Not as much sherry characteristics as its older brother. Great Whisky that should be a dram to savior.

Brett's take: 88
Not better than the 16 year old; not worse either.  Definitely different, though.
Less balance.  Notes of tar and burnt rope (in a good way).  More fun, less contemplative than the 16.

Lagavulin Distiller's Edition 1990

Glen - 90

This is one very tame Lagavulin. Still fantastic, but in a much different way. The dram is well balanced and the sherry doesn't overpower the whisky. The great dry Lagavulin finish (which I love) is gone, but it's been replaced with an equally complex long and sweet finish. Subtle, rich and deep. Still, nothing compares to the 16 year old, which is not a fair comparison (to any dram).

Nose: Malty, sherry, fresh sea air, a whiff of smoke
Body: Chewy and sweet
Finish: Long, sharp and sweet, drying with some peat coming through in the end

A sweet Lagavulin.

Jeff - 92

A fantastic whisky that seems to get better with each sip. I think this is the best besides the Lagavulin 30 year old.

Lots of vanilla in the nose with a roasted maltyness that keeps you coming back for more. The body is heavy with a sweet salty taste that all most makes you call your ex-girlfriend and invite her over.

Finish is long and with some dried fruit with hints of peat. WOW I'm in love just don't tell my wife.

Brett's Take: 92
Secondarily matured in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, one whiff will help delineate this Lagavulin from its brethren. As you would expect, this is a very sherried dram! Almost Cabernet-like, this whisky also noses blueberries and floral notes along with its light peatiness, and one taster even picked-up stewed fruits. A medium mouth feel gives way to a not-overly-complex finish, predominated by a pleasing astringency that is actually almost cooling! Wine-like in its tannic character, this dram wafts away on a pillow of dried nuts. Very enticing.

Lagavulin 21 year old

Dec/2007
A great lagavulin that has everything except that long and amazingly dry finish that defines the 16 yr old. The nose is dominated by maple cured bacon and peat smoke while the body is thick and mouth coating. The finish is big, dry and medium length.

Nose: Maple cured bacon, a camp fire, leather and peat smoke
Body: Thick and moth coating
Finish: Big and dry, sharp, medium length

Not a classic but respectable.

Jeff - 87

When I received this bottle I couldn't hide my emotions calling my brother and telling him he better be nice to me or else no 21. Then I had it, A very nice whisky but I was hoping for so much more. It had a nice big toffee, dried fruit, morning breakfast nose, then it kind of went south from there. The body was rich and full bodied. With peppery notes with a hint of salt. The finish was smoky, leathery and sharp.

Brett's Take: 90
Lots of overpowering stuff here. The nose is extremely perfumed; full of ripe fruits, peaches, caraway seeds, and loads of malt. It is coastal, lightly smoky, and, according to another taster contains hints of caramel fudge, though I have to admit, I'm missing that. Deliciously full-bodied and mouth-coating. The finish is also extremely big and full, stuffed with cooked fruits, sugar almonds, nonpareils, and especially smoke. Honestly, a very nice dram, though I would have liked a little more balance between the beginning perfume and the ending smoke.

Lagavulin 30, cask strength, bottle 2,222

Glen - 95

My wife gave me this bottle for my 37th Birthday and quickly announced that it would be the last bottle she ever bought me. It seems she thought the price was a little high and thought the money should go to (supposedly) more important things like the mortgage or groceries. My ramblings about the 'water of life', 'Lagavulin being my favorite distillery' and 'price doesn't matter for such a great work of art'; fell on deaf ears.

It's hard to top Lagavulin's 16 year old but this whisky makes a good attempt. It still has much of the great Islay fire that can get too tamed down after such a long maturation process. A very smooth, complex and big Lagavulin that's very warming and flavorful. This dram stays with you for an eternity and one glass can last you the whole night. This dram will consume you whole.

Nose: Ancient and woody, sweet, tobacco, heather, peat smoke and coastal brine
Body: Medium to thick, lighter without water
Finish: Incredibly dry, long and peaty, a slow burn and then a roaring fire, some sweetness, amazing!

You don't drink this whisky, you experience it.

Jeff - 94

This was the finiest Lagavulin, i've tried.
Very pricy, but if your brother haa a bottle drink his. I found this whisky very well balenced and so complex. You will pick up sweet oak, vanellia, some Tabacco in the nose. then here comes the body rich, full bodied, silky with a sexy smoky finish that makes you stop for a moment and say wow was that whisky really that good.

Brett's Take: 94
Damn. Why do some expensive whiskies have to taste so darn good? Subtle and elegant, the 30 year old has very little bite, replacing that with notes of butterscotch, malt, light citrus, and fresh almonds. Medium-bodied, this whisky is just so…so…smooth, with a finish containing light peat and smoke (of course), malt, oak, Kona coffee, and fresh cream. All-consuming. I hate this dram.

I've always been a big Bowmore fan. Bowmore is a great whisky to start with if you new to Islays. This dram has that trademark peaty Bowmore taste and a nice sweetness to balance it out.

Nose: peat, cigarette ash
Body: Firm
Finish: Intense while it lasts, the peat sticks to your mouth, some light smoke

A great peaty dram that's not too intense

Nose: Young, some light smoke and peat
Body: Light, hot, a little untamed
Finish: Nice peaty finish that's not as long as the 12 year old but still measures up

Glen - 89

This is one great dram, but I'm a sucker for Bowmore. This is one of the best in their standard range. The sherry is balanced perfectly with the Islay peat and smoke. The perfect marriage of beauty and the beast (sorry I couldn't help it). The underlining spirit could have been aged longer but the sherry pulls it through nicely. If they used a slightly older whisky this dram would go from good to great. A well balanced treat.

Nose: Oloroso sherry, oaky, peat smoke, fresh, caramel
Body: Syrupy, mouth filling, wonderful
Finish: Long, sweet and slightly drying, subtle smoke

A beautiful combination of peat smoke and oloroso sherry.

Jeff - 85

This is a nice bottle of whisky but I don't see what Glen is all excited about. I will admit I'm a speyside sherry fan, so I was pretty exited to try this whisky for the first time. It has  a winey, nutty fresh nose with a sweet woody aroma. The body and palate was very nice, chewy creamy and the finish was very delicate smooth and long.

A nice whisky but just missing that wow factor for me.

Jeff - 96 Editor Pick Spring 2008

I had the pleasure, and it was a pleasure, to taste the new Black Bowmore 1964,
aged 42 years. It was one of the top 5 whiskies I've tried in the last 6 months.
The first thing that struck me was how different this whisky was. The nose was
ripe with exotic fruit (mangoes, papayas) with an old feel to it that was surprisingly
very fresh. What makes this whisky so unique is, it was aged in walnut
(yes, walnut) sherry casks. The taste was silky -- not oily nor heavy, just perfect,
with no hint of smoke from this Islay, but with a sexy lingering finish.
It's like you're in the Caribbean on the beach, listening to steel drums with a
beautiful island girl sitting next to you. WOW!
The whisky, I feel, is almost underpriced.

Bowmore 1970 35 year old Signatory

Glen - 83

An ancient Bowmore from Signatory that's big on sherry and light on peat and smoke. The sherry on the nose was not overdone and hints of fudge and burnt caramel that only come from whiskies aged for long periods in high quality sherry casks. The sherry still did maintain some fresh notes and didn't come off tired. This dram was nice enough but lacked that wow factor that you would demand from such an old and surely expensive malt.

Nose: Big sherry, fudge, burnt caramel, A nice freshness despite it's age
Body: Full, mouth coating
Finish: Long, dry and smoky, sherry and oak

Nice.

Brett - 85

Ah…an Islay. And a nice old one at that, though you wouldn't know it from the freshness of the nose - very pretty. There is also licorice and light sherry, but what predominates is a profound Bowmore smokiness, specifically salami and smoked summer sausages. The body on this dram continues the "chewy" theme, being beautifully full-bodied. This Bowmore's finish was not nearly as big as the nose, though it did still have a level of smokiness to it, along with old sherry and a slight mustiness, and (possibly) too much oak. Still, nice to see how some extra time in the cask can change a classic whisky.

Can this whisky live up to all the hype and anticipation I had built up in my mind? That's what I was thinking as a sat down to sample this rare and pricy dram? Let's just say I was a wee bit disappointed. My co-taster expounded on all the fruit, fruit, fruit but what he failed to mention was a bitter orange finish and unpleasant peach aftertaste. Not fresh peaches mind you but peach hard candy, and who the heck likes peach candy? NOT ME! The nose was by far the best part of this dram with dried apricots, leather, a touch of ash and peat. The body was silky smooth but the finish really ruined what was up to that point a good date.

A young but good expression from Bruichladdich. Sometimes it's difficult to cut through all of the different expressions that are offered from this Islay distillery. At its core, Bruichladdich makes lightly peated whisky that is much lighter than many of the more pungent whiskies found on Islay. You know your drinking a young whisky but it holds up well with a nice dry peaty finish. Bruichladdich tends to be pricey so this is a nice inexpensive option.

Laphroaig 10

Glen - 79

Updated Nov 2008
The standard Laphroaig ten year old is an intense dram at the very top of the single malt flavor profile. The first time I tried this robust malt it was like eating a charred piece of wood dipped in iodine. Loads of smoke and peat, and by far the most pungent and distinctive of the Islay malts. Definitely a dram you build up to. A tab too medicinal for my taste.

Nose: Big smoke, iodine, very medicinal, heather
Body: Full
Finish: Long and dry, a smoke and peat assault

Not for the faint of heart.

Jeff - 88

The only Distillery to make a profit in the US during prohibition because of its iodine & peat character it was sold for medicinal purposes. A truly underrated whisky that grows on you like a fungus. A great night cap for the experienced whisky lover.

This is Islay whisky at its truest and most basic form. This complex and smoky full throttle dram will leave your head spinning. The nose has a wonderful fresh sea air quality that hides the true power of this dram, which hits you in the finish. This dram is the very pinnacle of what Islay is all about. I usually will make this the only, or the last, dram of the night since it will destroy your palate for anything else. One of the best.

Nose: Seaweed and salt, a fresh sea breeze, earthy, smoke and peat

Finish: Very long and dry, wet ash, a morning campfire

A dram to fear; but one you'll grow to love.

I love Laphroaig! But as I was enjoying this dram I had to keep reminding myself that I was actually drinking a Laphroaig. The smack in the face is gone but it's been replaced with a wonderfully complex and flavorful dram that may be loved by more non Laphroaig fans than the laphroaig faithful. When I think peat, Ardbeg is always the first dram that comes to mind. Although peat dominates all their drams, Ardbeg still has a nice drinkable character. The ten year old has a nice fresh peat smoky nose with notes of malt and iodine. Clearly the nose is the best part of the dram. The body is thick and warming while the finish is overwhelmingly peaty. The dram does linger although the finish is medium to short in length.

Nose: Fresh peat, malt, smoke, iodine and fruit
Body: Thick
Finish: Medium length, dominated by peat, lingering

Love it or hate it, you must love peat to enjoy this dram or need to seek professional help. A ferociously powerful dram with a medicinal phenols finish. They say scotch is an acquire taste, then you have to acquire a new one for Ardbeg

Brett's Take: A nose that is on the one hand peaty with light smoke, and on the other somewhat youthful, with hints of gauze and tar. The medium-heavy mouthfeel gives way to an overpowering finish of smoke and peat, along with hints of butterscotch. Powerful, and what people think of when discussing Ardbeg. Rating: 80 (Nov, 2007)

This one is my favorite Ardbeg in the current distillery range. Again, a great nose but the dram is much more balanced. This is all peat but done very well. The peat warps itself around you instead of punching you in the face. Less smoke and more sweetness come through. Very complex and enjoyable. A BIG, BIG peaty whisky.

Nose: Fresh and clean, peat, smoke, menthol, deep-pulls you in, chocolate, sweet, coastal brine
Body: Medium
Finish: Big peat and fiery, burning, medium length, perfumed sweetness

A thinking man's Ardbeg

A beautiful, complex nose. A juxtaposition of descriptions went flying around the testing table with this one: meadow freshness, mint, seashore, smoke, fishing nets, menthol, chocolate mints, a perfumed sweetness. Somehow, though, everything complemented each other. Like most Ardbegs, "the Beastie" was medium-bodied, but unlike most, the finish was a little short, though warming. The finish was nicely balanced; still peaty, less smoky, with baked apples and more mint. Well done.

Dec/2007
We were fortunate enough to sample Ardbeg's new Double Barrel collection that retails for the low low sum of only $20,000. The collection includes two hand made bottles of single cask 1974 Ardbeg, a Purdey guncase, six Silver Hamilton and Inches silver cups and a wooden pen. The case and cups are cool but the real question is, how's the whisky? Well it didn't disappoint but I did disagree with my fellow tasters on which one was the best. I preferred Cask #3145, which I found to be very subtle and elegant. Much different then the BIG peat character of many Ardbeg drams. Very well balanced and exceptionally smooth.

Nose: Subtle and elegant, peat smoke, honey, brine, very fresh and clean
Body: Light and flavorful
Finish: Medium length and subtle, peat, very smooth and gentle, flavorful

A very gentle and elegant Ardbeg. I loved it.

This one was the crowd favorite (excluding me). Hey not that it wasn't great but I preferred the smooth elegance of cask #3145. This dram came off much spicier, incredibly well balanced and enjoyable. Had a fresh clean nose that you could loose yourself in. Not quite the experience I was promised but an exceptional dram nonetheless.

Finish: Medium length, cloves, peat, malt

Well put together.

Glen has lost his marbles on this one, I almost paid the 20,000 for the two bottles because I enjoyed them so much. I thought this whisky had it all nose, taste, balance, peat, finish all working together with one common goal, whisky bliss

The gentlest of the Islays. A very good dram at a reasonable price. Doesn't have the same power as others but can definitely stand on its own. A good dram if you like a little smoke but not that distinctive Islay iodine taste.

Nose: Salty, burnt chocolate, sea air
Body: Medium, covers the mouth
Finish: Long, satisfying

I could drink this one all day.

A very refreshing dram that has a gentle fresh sea-air quality. A underrated whisky because of its difference from other Islays. A gentle dram at a great price that is no longer a secret.

Brett's take: Rating 85
Boring.  Not bad, just not enough of what's good.  This is as un-Islay a dram as the island has to offer - a little salt, a little "nose sting", a little sweetness, a little finish.  Give me something BIG, even if it's a BIG softness.  Maybe it's just more subtle than I am?  Probably.

I've never met a Bunna I didn't like and this one is no exception. Bunnahbhain never seems to get the credit it deserves even though they make outstanding whisky. The 18 year old is less briny then the 12 and has more sweetness and sherry. I prefer the 12 year old slightly more since it's a little less sweet and has more of a salty character.

Not as big of a fan as Glen, But it's a nice whisky. The finish seems a little creamy for me, almost like mom but to much peanut butter on your sandwich. A nice salt air nose and a complex body with hits of toasted nuts.

Brett's take: Rating 93
Ahhh, now that's a Bunna!  Older isn't always better, but it is in this case!  Light smoke, elegant sweetness, a nuttiness that only barely appears.  And a finish that wafts away slowly with ever lessening crescendos (Sorry, I'm getting a little carried away).  The only thing wrong with this dram is the inflated price - even at 25 years, I still can't help thinking , "but it's still a Bunna!"  Of course, I'll probably change my tune when I finish my bottle and have to go buy another, which will then seem entirely reasonable.

A wonderful big smokey dram. I fell in love with the 18 year old Caol Ila and
this one is almost as good. Big smoke in the nose and a deceptively light body,
the smoke comes back in a great medium length finish.

Nose: Green grass, smoke, peat, a little young
Body: light and a tad oily
Finish: Medium to long and smoky, vanilla, full of flavor

I could drink this one all day!

This dram Jumps right at you, At first the nose and body seems a little young. But, then the light oily body coats your Palate with spicy notes and hints a vanilla. A nice whisky to enjoy by yourself with the lights dimmed and tasting each hidden note.

Brett's take: Rating 87
Fantastic smoke on the nose and finish.  Almost overpowers everything else, but the oak and vanilla do peek through, as does the spice in the body.  Young, but distinctive - you know what you're drinking the moment you smell it.  If you like the smell and feel of a campsite the morning after a rain, this is the dram for you!

Glen - 88

A very unique dram that's very difficult to find. We found a few in some specialty shops in Scotland and quickly snatched them up. The distillery uses unpeated barley in this dram but the whisky still has some smoke. The dram felt older then it is and wasn't overly grassy that so many young drams have in abundance. A subtle nose greets you with hints of grass, tart apples and charcoal. The body is light to medium and the finish is sharp and intense. Not a very well balanced dram but it all seemed to work exceptionally well.

Nose: Fresh, grassy, charcoal, tart apples, sea air

Body: Light to medium

Finish: Long and sharp, the bite lingers, warming, smoke

Not a dram that you drink all day but perfect for when you're in the mood for an intense treat.

A great scotch that starts out sweet and then the smoke begins. A wonderful whisky seemingly made for a flask and enjoyed hiking or fishing. Has a sweetness that comes through with it's long maturation process.

More elegant than the 12-year-old, but loses some of its distinction in the process.  I can see where it's a "better" malt; more complex, a richer nose (do I detect gingersnaps?  Why, yes, Jess, I do!).  For my money, though, I like the quirkiness of the 12-year-old.

The best thing about the 14 is that it signaled the end of the 8 year old, which was not very good.  The 14, therefore, had an easy act to follow - but they went out of their way to make a really good Scotch anyway.  I nose honey and the seaside, and taste barley and toasted nuts.  This dram has a nice balance of flavors, and a sweet, smooth finish.  About the only thing it doesn't have is a lock, to keep my brother-in-law out of it!  (As an aside - at the last Whiskyfest New York, the Scapa folks trotted out a bottle of an older expression [25, I think] trying to get us to go out and purchase one.  But they wouldn't pour any!  Let me tell you something:  for what that bottle probably costs, I'm darn well sampling some first!  Way to Tick someone off, Scapa!)  I do like that 14, though.

This may seem silly, but this dram was…fun. It's crisp, light body was preceded by a nose of lightly roasted pecans, malt, and fresh-cut lawn. Not what we expected from a Highland Park. And that carried over to the finish. I'm not sure the Highland Park people would appreciate the comparison, but the 15 year old reminded me of a "Lagavulin light": peat, iodine, burnt rope, but offset nicely by tart apples and some chestnuts as it wafted away in a very smooth finish. A complex whisky that isn't drowned out by the first fill sherry casks that are used for about half of the whiskies maturation life. For me, the sherry doesn't improve Highland Park but it does add a unique whisky to their range. Lacks that great Highland Park character that comes together so well in the 18 year old.

The longer maturation has tamed the beast but added complexity and smoothness. A dram that should be slowly savored and taken out for special occasions. The smoke and peat are toned down which allows sweeter notes to come through, like honey and fudge.

Body: Medium bodied with more of a chocolate sweetness than peat
Finish: Long, flavorful and dry

Special!

Highland Park's sippin' whisky. Very subtle, with a (not overpowering) oaky nose, that is also slightly nutty with a vanilla sweetness and musty character. There seem to be different layers of sweetness to the nose that just add to the overall complexity of the dram. The body is crisp and clean on the palate, belying this whisky's 30 years. This beauty's smooth finish completes the package - dry, medium-to-short, with apples and that almost omnipresent bitter-orange character. A whisky to be savored.

A very straightforward Ledaig that left me flat. This dram just didn't get the blood pumping and came off thin and lacked complexity. No peat in the nose and only a whiff of smoke. Reminded me of the line that Bugs Bunny used to say at the close of each cartoon "that's all folks".

Nose: Grassy, fresh, light brine, a whiff of smoke
Body: Light, thin
Finish: Short, some iodine and brine, very light

lacks complexity.

Brett - 81

A Highland from the island of Mull, this is a rather simple dram, with a very fresh nose: lightly briny, with wisps of smoke weaving in & out of the vanilla and oak. An exceptionally light body is followed quickly by a short finish of iodine and muskmelon. An aperitif whisky, for those so inclined.

Glen Scotia 12 Year Old, 1992

Glen - 92

The 'other' Campbeltown that isn't nearly as popular as Springbank. This dram does Campbeltown justice. The nose had a wonderful fresh and clean salty feel that reminded me more of the ocean versus the Bay. Very subtle and easy drinking but also had plenty of depth and character. A wonderful dram that I highly recommend for anyone who loves Campbeltown and/or coastal drams.

Nose: Fresh and clean, sea salt, vanilla, fudge, nougat, malty, almond extract
Body: Light to medium
Finish: Starts strong fades away and then comes back, lingering and warming, almonds

Brilliant!

Brett - 88

Any day that I can get my hands on a Campbeltown whisky is a good day. Traditionally lighter than its neighbor, Springbank, this Glen Scotia did not disappoint. A very deep, well-balanced dram, it started-off very fresh, full of sea-air, freshly mown lawn, malt, almond extract, and Italian torrone. With a satisfying medium-light body, this whisky was just setting us up for the finish; medium, yet quietly lingering, with an open-air freshness, and the soft sweetness of fresh almonds and light mocha. A delicate, elegant whisky.

A remarkable dram that I couldn't stand when I first started drinking single malts. Truly exceptional! If you own one Campbeltown this is the one to have.

Nose: Sweet, malty, dry
Body: Heavy, oily
Finish: Long, light smoke, spice

In everyone's top ten for a reason.

Jeff - 81

I have to disagree with Glen & Bret, not one of my favorites. Its oily texture I feel lacks balance. For me I don't think it lives up to the hype nor does it replace the 21 year old. But, as a collector you can't go wrong buying a springbank as an investment.

Brett's take: 94
Springbank 15 - Don't believe Jeff.  He was probably drunk when he wrote his reviews (on some Speyside crap, I'll wager).  This is one of the finest drams available, though it does taste like motor oil.  Although it is a heavy dram, it does have some sweetness, and a great finish.  It is definitely a whisky to savor.  Superb!  Rating=94

Springbank never disappoints and this one (to date) is the best I've tried. This is a big incredible malt that I only wish was more widely available. The nose is tremendous with notes of tangerines, kiwi and burnt caramel. I even noted freshly peeled cucumber skin and nectarines. The finish is long dry and warming. I found that water dulled the nose to much and the dram was better neat even tough it was cask strength. I didn't want this one to end.

Nose: Tangerines, burnt caramel, kiwi, freshly peeled cucumber skins, over ripe nectarines (a great nose)
Body: Mouth coating (a classic Spingbank)
Finish: Long, dry and warming

Finished in sherry, this Springbank is special. It has a great nose and finish and you know you're drinking a Campbeltown with the first sip. The nose was sweet from the sherry with under currents of light peat. The finish was long dry and lightly peated. Even though it's aged for 31 years it maintains that wonderful springbank oiliness in the body. Water opened it up nicely.

Not nearly as rich and deep as the 15 year old expression. The 15 is a classic full bodied dram and one of my favorites. The 12 year old is not as complex, comes off a little young and doesn't have the great finish of the 15. You still do have some nice sherry, especially in the nose. And overall it's an honest straightforward dram. I would reach for the 10 year old Aberlour over this dram and both bottles are around the same price.

Aberlour is a great distillery that produces delicious drams in the heart of Speyside.

A big malt that's finished in oloroso Sherry casks. Rich and creamy that has good depth and character. One of my favorite wood finished drams. A winner for those whole like sherry finished scotch.

Jeff - 85

A very woody dram with sherry overtones. the finish is soft with the hint of spicy fruit. A nice whisky on a rainy day

Brett's take: 85
A sherried dram that is much lighter in body than it appears it would be.  Pleasant, nicely balanced malt.  It's a little creamy, a little spicy, but mostly just smooth.  I'm hesitant to call anything a "beginner's malt", first because there's no such thing, but also because the connotation is that it can only get better from there.  However, this is a great malt to introduce people to if they say they don't like whisky.  Even if they do!

A straightforward and respectable Speyside that had a nice warming character. Perfect for a flask on a cold day. This dram perked up nicely with a touch of water. My only complaint was a lingering bitter aftertaste.

Nose: Light, malty, honey, butter, fresh
Body: Medium
Finish: Explodes in the mouth, long and spicy, butterscotch, warming

A nice everyday type of dram

Brett - 82

A beautiful fresh, malty nose that softly explodes with honey butter. There is also the essence of those hard peppermint candies that you get in diners. It's a sharp segue to the palate, which is medium weight, very spicy, and perhaps a bit young. This whisky's finish, though, recalls its start (as all good whiskies should), with echoes of butterscotch and candy caramels. The medium-long finish also strangely seemed a little "fizzy", although this couldn't be understood by any of us. Nonetheless, a very nice dram.

This peated Speyside whisky really surprised
me. Normally only bottled by independents,

almost makes you forget about that little Island on the west coast of Scotland. Clean peat smoke, if there is such a thing! Like a nice

Opens with a nose full of orange zest, but also vanilla, malt, caramel, and spice (ginger, cinnamon). The Double Wood's aroma is also slightly "biscuity", recalling a kitchen after baking. A medium mouthfeel, presages a medium-long, sweet finish of sherry, honey, malt, and some oak at the very end. And oranges. You'd better like oranges.

At first the nose seemed younger then that 12 year old Doublewood expression but improved with water and the longer the dram stayed in the glass.  Had a slightly bitter aftertaste that was consistent with others in the range. Very similar to the 12 year old but lacked that little extra the sherry imparts.

Nose: Grassy without water, fresh, vanilla, fruity, oak
Body: Heavy
Finish: Long and sharp without water, warming, a tad bitter

This one needs water.

Brett - 84

A scintillating nose! It is fresh, eye-opening, and invigorating; grassy and lemony, with big malt and hints of allspice. Good Morning! Unfortunately, this dram quickly says goodnight. It is, unsurprisingly, medium-light on the palate, but unfortunately a little too short in the finish. Maybe not unfortunately. Unless you like peppery heat mixed with marsh grass and bitter orange zest. (Since the 15 YO expression is from a single barrel, and each barrel produces only 300+ bottles of whisky, it goes without saying that almost each bottle you buy will probably be a little different. In fact, some of the best Balvenie's that I've had have been from the 15 YO expression. This particular bottle was not one of them. Do not let that sway you - my past experience convinces me that this bottle was an anomaly. I hope.)

Rum!!! Nosing this dram, I felt like throwing-on an eye patch, swinging the bottle around, and giving a little Yo Ho Ho. It's almost that overpowering. But, shiver me timbers, there is more to it. Avast (sorry, I get carried away), there's also fresh nuts, vanilla wafers, and nectarines lurking in this inviting aroma. The body is medium-weight, and the finish medium-length, with distinct flavors dueling for prominence: the bitter of quinine and orange zest vs. the sweet of honey and fruitcake. This Balvenie is matured exclusively in sherry casks. This one will be a treat for Balvenie fans who rarely get a chance to buy a Balvenie that's been aged exclusively in sherry. The sherry is well balanced and not overdone. Plenty of other flavors peek through, like, pumpkin spice, toasted nuts, and fruit. A very nice and enjoyable Balvenie.

Nose: Sherry, pumpkin spice, toasted nuts, fruity
Body: Medium to full, flavorful
Finish: Long and spicy, dry and complex

Very flavorful and smooth. A good Fall/Winter dram.

Brett - 90

I'm usually not a fan of BIG sherry drams - I find them overpowering. This dram is an exception. It is beautifully textured and, although the sherry is completely to the fore, it is far from oppressive. In fact, this limited edition release is remarkably fresh, allowing all of its olfactory friends to come out and play: almonds (roasted and fresh), well-oiled leather, balsamic vinegar, and gorgeous oak. Given the sherry, the body was lighter than I imagined it would be (which is not to say it was light, at all). The finish to this expression was no less luxurious: vanilla, lemon crème, and butter-almond ice cream. And a little sherry, of course. My advice (for what it's worth): get a bottle, before they're gone!

I could drink this whisky all day and night. I feel the finest in the range and I feel one of the better buys on the market today. the rich body with taffy, rich spiciness is just fantastic. The port does come threw on the finish that is smooth and long.

Brett's Take: Rating - 83
The Port Wood starts out with the traditional Balvenie aroma of oranges and oak, but the port pipes add so much more: raspberries, honey, a sweetness somewhere between saccharin and marzipan, and above all, depth. Like most Balvenies, the Port Wood has a medium-weight body, but the finish is now starting to stretch-out. And that's a good thing, because this finish is full. With a mélange of mixed, salted nuts, sweet malt, bitter orange, light peat, fresh toffee, and recollections of a summer orchard, this is one 21 year old who's all grown up.

It's almost intoxicating. This 25 YO is very full-bodied, especially for a Balvenie, and also has quite a long finish; a nice treat. And what a finish! I was intrigued by this mahogony colored dram as it sat on the shelves of the Oban distillery shop, so I just had to pick it up. The old Flora & Fauna line usually never disappoints so I was fairly comfortable with my purchase even though I never actually tried the liquid inside. Unfortunately, the experience of buying this dram outweighed its contents. The dram was unbalanced with an overabundance of sherry and youthful grassiness, and much too much heat in the finish. It does improve with a heavy pour of water.

Cragganmore 12:  "Hard to find something not to like?"  How about, it's thin, not fragrant enough, and the interesting banana notes at the first taste are drowned out by formaldehyde.  The label says it has the most complex aroma of any malt.  Right.  Take a walk next door to Glenfarclas and nose something there, then decide. A rich and robust smoky Speyside. Dailuaine offers wonderful depth and its rich and warming character make it the perfect cold-weather dram. This one should come with a fireplace and a premium cigar. It noses like a rich Speyside and finishes like a great smoky Highland. Perfect balance.

Nose: Clean and rich, oak, sherry, touch of smoke, sweet, cherry cordials, a touch of peat to round it off
Body: Medium and smooth
Finish: Long and dry, smoky, sharp and warming

A brilliant dram.

Jeff - 94

One of the most balanced whiskies you'll ever try. Almost perfect in everyway.  Very smooth and clean with a nice sherry balance. If you can find it, don't let it out of your sight

Brett's take: Rating 86
Dailuaine 16:  Caution:  This is not a summer dram - Drink this only in winter!  Very thick, sherry sweet, almost syrupy.  You still catch oak and malt, but it is so big and full that it is definitely not the refreshing aperitif you'd want on a hot day.  While usually not my style, there's something about Dailuaine that just makes you smile.

With a name like Macduff, I'm sure this would be Homer's Simpson's choice if he drank Scotch. A good straightforward whisky that had a pleasant menthol character. I've never met a Macduff that I really loved but this one gave it a college try. A light nose dominated by sherry and oak. A medium flavorful body but a harsh and slightly bitter finish left me at the alter. Dohhhh!

A great whisky with hints of honey. A well balanced dram at a great price. I don't think Glenfarclas could make a bad whisky even if they tried. Voted the best Distillery in "06 and for good reason.

Brett's take: Rating
A light nose; malty; minty; fresh. A mild, slightly oily body; young, but without that "tequila" aldehyde taste that can sometimes mar other young whiskies. A light sherry finish, I found it shorter than my co-tasters did. An excellent "straight-ahead" malt.

After recently seeing Glenfiddich's Solera Vat in person I just had to sample this often overlooked Glenfiddich once again. I've always enjoyed this expression but until actually nosing and getting a few fingers wet in the Solera Vat, which of course was a total accident, I've come to appreciate this dram even more. Updated July, 2008
This is one of the most popular whiskies in the world and played a big part of introducing America if not the world to the wonders of Single Malt Scotch. Approachable and honest sums up this easy going Speyside. A tad tight but overall nice nose dominated by oak and oranges gives way to a light and smooth body and short but flavorful finish. A good introduction to The Glenlivet.

Nose: Oak, oranges, malt, vanilla, dried hay, peaches, pumpkin spice
Body: Light and smooth
Finish: Short with a big initial burst of oak, peaches

A good and honest dram.

Jeff - 83

The Glenlivet has an exceptional nose with loads of character, it's soft rounded body is nice to help drink the sorrows away, with a nice warming finish. A well priced whisky that is easy to find.

Brett's Take: A fairly tight nose. Oaky and malty, with lots of fruit notes (oranges and peaches). There is also an apple spiciness and hints of honey-soaked ladyfingers. A medium-to-light body gives way to an equally medium-length finish, full of vanilla, malt, dry oak, and fresh nuts. Although it doesn't seem to handle water well, it doesn't need to. The Glenlivet's omnipresent classic. (Rating: 81)

July, 2008

I'm normally a big fan of The Glenlivet but this dram never grabbed me. A very light whisky that left you with the feeling of; 'is that it'? A very light nose, a very light body and a very short finish. Do I see a pattern developing? Not a bad dram but do yourself a favor and grab the 12 year old and save some cash.

Nose: Musty, black tea, oak, vanilla, honey, fresh and floral
Body: Light, a whisper
Finish: Very short, oak and peaches, warming

Underwhelming.

Working with French Oak can be challenging. This dram is no exception, with an interesting mix at work on the nose. At times slightly bitter, with light musk, white tea, orange zest, light oak, and notes of creampuffs, this is an unusual mélange. The body surprised by being so light, and the finish by being so short, but not unpleasantly so, as it was also quite spicy with notes of dried hay, more oak, and an interesting fruit compote. A different Glenlivet.

A perfect Speyside whisky where the oak really shines through. This dram is one of my all time favorites for it's exceptional depth and complexity. The nose begins with sweet oak and malt, with hints of honey and vanilla until buttered toast and a floral character come through. The body is oaky and smooth while the finish is long and warming with more oak and honey. Perfect neat that I love to order as a starter to a fine meal. A fine and luxurious whisky.
First rate and matured to perfection. Highly recommended.

Nose: Sweet oak and malt, honey, vanilla, raisins, buttered toast, floral
Body: Medium mouth feel, smooth and oaky
Finish: Long and warming, oak and honey

The perfect Speyside.

Jeff - 87

If you like the nose on the 12 you'll love this one. A nice complex whisky that is raw and not overdone. A sweet nutty body fills your mouth with a long finish something its younger brother is missing.

Brett's Take: An extremely complex dram, with an exceptional nose of sweet cream, oranges, fresh meadows, butterscotch, vanilla beans, and oodles of honey. The satisfying medium-weight mouthfeel is nicely followed-up by a finish as complex as the nose. Slightly tannic and with moderate heat, the finish shows good length while showcasing orange zest, anisette toasts, lemons, oak, and a buttery smoothness at the last. Very well-balanced! That being said, I admit that I'm in the minority here. This is a very (underline very) good dram. But when speaking of The Glenlivet, most people treat this expression as the Second Coming. I must have been looking the other way. Quite a good dram; and a good value, yes. Raising Lazarus from the dead and walking on water, well… (Rating: 83)

Glen - 89

N'adurra (Gaelic for Natural) is a new cask strength whisky from The Glenlivet distillery. This one is much more powerful and flavorful then others in their range, even after you add water. The flavors are tight and very pronounced. I love their 18 year old expression for its smoothness and subtle flavors and I liked this one for the opposite reasons. I cut the whisky with a healthy pour of water and it enhanced the dram immensely.

Nose: Nutty, vanilla and honey
Body: Hot, untamed, medium bodied
Finish: Long and dry with hints of fresh fruit and a whiff of smoke

A great dram!

Brett - 91

Attention purists: this whisky is cask strength and non-chill filtered. So have your water at the ready, though Nadurra is so smooth, you may not need it. The nose on this beauty possesses a honey and corn sweetness, with vanilla, coffee beans, apples, summer fruits, peppermints, and melting sugar. If you do add water, also notice the fresh hay and the tobacco. The purity of the malt assures a heavy mouthfeel, and the finish, also, does not disappoint. Medium-long, with a nice fizzy tingle, Nadurra is, by turns, oaky, and sweet, with big notes of maple syrup, ginger candies, and The Glenlivet's ever-present oranges. A must have.

The few extra years of maturation really add a nice richness and depth to this whisky. Surprisingly, I get less oak; even though it's aged longer than its younger siblings. The nose is complex but comes off musty, with notes of orange, cinnamon, and vanilla. The mouthfeel is light and tingly while the finish is medium-length with some bite. The finish is where the oak comes through, along with peach pits, honey, and anise. A nice, high-end Glenlivet.

Nose: Musty, deep, oranges, cinnamon, vanilla
Body: Light and tingly
Finish: Medium with some bite, oak, peach pits, honey, anise

Nice complexity and depth.

Jeff - 81

At first I really enjoyed its firm body but it lost me at hello. The maltiness took over and I could never recover.

Brett's Take: From the first sniff, you can tell that this one's different. Gone (almost) are the floral notes that are such a hallmark of The Glenlivet as to be almost not worth mentioning - except when they're not there. In their place lies a heavier, sweeter, more sherried nose; musty, with scents of cooked tomatoes, sugar cane, orange peel, malt, cinnamon, and vanilla. Given the heaviness of the nose, you would expect a body that overwhelms your mouth, but the medium-weight is, instead, a pleasant surprise. As is the medium-long finish, which complements the nose nicely, with lots of oak, more orange peel, honey, peach pits, anise, and tanned leather. A very contemplative dram; possibly too heavily sherried for some, but it suits me just fine (and I'm not usually a sherry "guy"). (Rating: 88)

Medium-bodied, the 25 year old has a satisfying long finish; creamy, yet drier than I expected, with dark chocolate, honey, spices (especially cinnamon and allspice), and, of course, more oranges. Glen - 79

An ancient Glenlivet that's heavily sherried. Reminded me of Duncan Taylor's Glen Grant 34 year old but without the great balance. Any time you can get your hands on a Glenlivet this old it's a good day but I found the sherry a little overpowering and bitter. This is still a big flavorful whisky that had a rugged character and a wonderful nose. The finish was a little short but still very flavorful. Maybe I was just expecting way too much.

Nose: Reminded me of the 18th green, fresh, tobacco, leather, ancient sherry and oak
Body: Chewy to medium
Finish: Short with sherry overwhelming other notes, fruity and hot

A little over aged.

Brett - 78

Another very aged, sherried dram, this Glenlivit oozed old leather and wild grasses, and was at once both rugged and tamed. The body on this one was exceptionally big, full of a mix of fresh fruits. Its finish was a little surprising, though: medium-short, and bursting with (very) tart cherries. Warming, but a little abrupt. Still nice to get our hands on an older Glenlivit, though, and enjoy what a little extra time can do.

I always think of The Glenrothes as the 'thinking mans dram'. At first blush it's ok but doesn't wow you, but the more you dive in the more impressive it gets and more character it reveals. The 1991 expression exemplifies that. At first you're hit with Aldehyde which I don't care for but behind it you have wonderful depth and flavor. The body is rich while the finish is smooth and outstanding. Seems to melt away in your mouth.

Nose: Aldehyde at first, fruit, orange zest, deep
Body: Big and rich, chewy, wonderful mouthfeel
Finish: Medium length, very smooth and elegant, exceptional

First rate with an exceptional finish

Complex and deep this malt has some character. By far the best Glenrothes I've tried and one that should be a must for any Glenrothes fan. My only problem with the dram was that the finish was a little short. The finish was extremely flavorful I just wish it would have lasted longer.

Nose: Deep & Complex, currants, sherry, caramel

This is a nice well balanced dram that lacked a wow factor but was still enjoyable. Had a long satisfying finish and put the dram over the top. You usually can't go wrong with Glenrothes and this one is no exception.

Nose: Sharp, malty, oak, citrus and nutmeg
Body: Light to medium
Finish: Long and satisfying, lemon, oak and some malt

A lovely finish.

Brett - 86

A classic Speyside. If you are a Glenrothes fan, it's all here for you, just tweaked a little. The nose, though sharper than usual, is still full of citrus (especially orange zest), with "oodles" of nutmeg and malt. There is an abundance of vanilla on the palate, but this Glenrothes is a little lighter, even thinner, than we were used to from this distillery. The finish picks this one back up, however. Very well-balanced; long and warming, with lemon and grapefruit at first, and a wafting of oak at the end.

Inchgower has a very coastal character and this dram was no exception. Heavy on brine but still had a nice sweetness to add complexity. I still prefer the 14 year old Flora Fuana Inchgower expression over this one but any time I get to try a dram from this distillery is a good day. Reminder me of the Jersey shore. A good floral dram that I found enjoyable if not overly complex. Like sticking you face in a fresh floral arrangement. Not overly sweet and reminded me more of a Highland malt. My co-taster picked up more wet grass which I didn't find as prominent. The finish on this dram was exceptional.

Nose: Fragrant floral notes, some grass and oak
Body: Chewy
Finish: Medium length, starts of hot and slowly fades away, burnt caramel, woody

Lacks complexity but it's a good flavorful dram.

The most straightforward of the bunch. The nose is extremely vegetal, full of wet grasses, with oak, caramel, and floral notes. This morphs into a medium, spicy palate, before ending with a short finish of caramel and hot wintergreen candy. We see this as a before-dinner aperitif.

Glen - 74

This dram is replacing the Lognmorn 15 year old expression. The first thing that hits you
with the new 16 year old is the updated packaging. The bottle has a catchy leather strap
around the base and metal band around the neck. Although different, the bottle seems
almost too desperate for attention. But who cares about packaging, what's in the bottle
matters most, right? The new 16 year old expression was mostly malt with a sharp
unbalanced finish. It wasn't a bad dram but it didn't come close to the dram it's
replacing. It does get better as it stays in the glass and hints of vanilla and oak come
through but not enough to compete with the all of the malt. The 15 year old was the type
of dram you opened with friends and no one left until the bottle was empty. I'm said to
say this updated version falls way short.

Nose: Clean, soft, malt, oak and vanilla
Body: Medium mouth feel, malty
Finish: Long and unpleasantly sharp, all malt

Unfortunately, the outside of the bottle is more impressive then what's under the cork.

If you're a Macallan fan, I'm sure you own a bottle or two of this one. This has all of the characteristics that made Macallan so popular among lovers of big sherry whiskies. Sherry on the nose with hints of vanilla extract, a rich body and sweet finish, it's all here. This was my Grandfather's favorite dram when he wanted to drink something special. Cheers, Pop Pop.

Nose: Fresh, sherry, nutty, vanilla extract
Body: Thick and rich
Finish: Short with a bitter after taste, rich, sweet, sherry, subtle smoke, musty

The standard Macallan.

Jeff - 86

I love big sherried drams and this one is right in that category. Lots of sherry but well balanced with some honey and a touch of smoke on the finish. Some oak and malt round it off.

Brett's Take: Rating 76
A youthful nose, full of simple syrup and vanilla beans. Also some wet walnuts and cloves to round it out. A medium-to-light body is followed abruptly by a finish of dry sherry, orange zest, and musk cologne. When I think of Macallan, this is the whisky I think of first.

This whisky is a real step up from the 12 year old, had a great comfortable feel to it. A rich spicy Macallan that is very flavorful and well balanced. This dram has a big rich nose highlighted by honey and vanilla. The body is full and the finish is medium length and warming. I think what I liked most about his dram is that the sherry isn't overpowering and lets other great flavors come through. First rate and very appealing.

Nose: Sweet, subtle sherry, honey, slight peat, vanilla extract, leathery
Body: Rich, medium to full
Finish: Medium length and warming, sherry, oak, cloves, some bite

Comforting.

Brett - 84

More complex than the 12-year-old, with a nose that explodes onto the senses: mild, sweet, with peach pits, heather honey, wet, tanned leather, vanilla, orange peel, and just the faintest hint of peat(?), this nose just sets-up the whole dram. A chewy, full-bodied mouthfeel precedes a taste/finish of toasted oak, more vanilla, sherry, and light spices. A little short, but this expression is exceptionally well-balanced.

A straight forward honest dram that I enjoyed. A little over sherried, but all in all it came off well balanced and flavorful. Had a nice burnt caramel and vanilla nose with a medium body and medium length complex finish. This is a cask strength whisky so make sure you add water.

Nose: Burnt caramel, vanilla, sherry, oak, toasted nuts, clean
Body: Medium
Finish: Medium length, dry, fruit, some light peat, some bite

Honest.

Brett - 83

Warm and deep, this whisky nosed wonderful burnt caramel, vanilla, and oak that, were it not for the omnipresent sherry, reminded us of fine bourbon. With water, there were light citrus notes, marzipan, and something that reminded me of a NY roasted nut cart. Like the 18-year-old, this expression was very well-balanced, with vanilla, oak, and heavy sherry on the palate. With water, it revealed more citrus (tangerines) in its medium-length finish.

A young whisky that came off a little unbalanced but pleasant enough. The oak is pronounced and introduces you well into the Fine Oak range. This dram has a nice nose but the body is thin and the finish was medium length and fruity. One of my favorite Macallans is the Fine Oak 15 year old so I was a little disappointed with this dram's lake of balance and thin character.

Body: Thin
Finish: Orange sorbet, dry, fruity, medium length

Underwhelming.

A fresh, very young nose, full of malt, hay, aldehyde, and vanilla. Also light honey, pineapple, and attic must. I don't love this one as much as Glen but it's a nice flavorful dram with tons of character. You can't go wrong with this one. It just doesn't taste like the Macallan that helped turn me on to single malt scotch.

Brett's Take: Rating 84
Sweeter and deeper than the F.O. 10-year-old, this whisky has delicious toffee notes playing against younger grassy notes. There is also that Macallan sweetness and orange aroma, as well as nutmeg, and what I can only compare to toast-and-butter (and what's better than that?). This whisky has a clean, medium-weight body, which suits it perfectly. And the finish…Long and lingering, sweet and smooth, nicely matching the nose, which, of course, is what you want. I picked-up caramel, more oranges, and a hint of milk chocolate. A fine whisky, before, during, or after a meal.

As a big fan of the 15 year old I was excited about trying this dram. Maybe that's in part why I was so disappointed. Much more floral and the beautiful balance of the 15 year old is gone. Replaced by a very good nose that doesn't match the finish. Had a clinging candy sweetness in a short uninspired finish. The dram just never comes together.

Nose: Musty, floral, malty, bourbon, burnt caramel, oak
Body: medium to heavy
Finish: Candy sweetness, very short, oranges

A little muddled in the finish but the nose is superior.

Very different than its 15-year-old cousin - much more floral, especially lavender, though there is still that burnt caramel sweetness and ever-present oak. A wow whisky and one of the best Macallans I've had. Out of our three tasters, two of us loved this dram while the other thought the dram was aged a little long and imparted to much oak. I either love or hate Macallan, I can find no middle ground. This is one of the drams that I loved. The sherry dominates but you can taste the quality of the casks that were used in the maturation process. Smooth and complex and yet surprisingly easy going. A drink all day, finish the bottle type of whisky that oozed age and sophistication. I know what I want for Christmas!

Nose: Clean, elegent, sherry, malt, honey, musty, reminded me of an old cozy pub
Body: Medium to chewy, mouth coating
Finish: Medium length, big at first and fades away nicely, oaky, spice, silky smooth

A great whisky in the classic Macallan style.

Brett - 84

Now this is a BIG whisky! A favorite of two of our tasters, this dram was chock-full of sherry, but also contained strong honey notes, and that balsamic vinegar character that only happens when a sherried dram is aged well. The palate was, of course, very full-bodied, with flavors of cherry-pie filling, and (maybe) just a little too much oak. A long, soft finish helped complete the picture, slightly resinous, with oranges and grapefruits also in the mix. A quintessential "sipping whisky".

A good rich dram that's sure to please. Very flavorful and complex. Stathisla is under appreciated and this dram is a great example of the fine whisky that this distillery can produce. My only complaint was that I found the finish a little short. The nose on this whisky was outstanding.

Nose: Spicy (cloves), floral, sweet, red wine, rich
Body: Rich
Finish: Medium to short, hot, caramel, vanilla and oak

A flavorful rich dram

Jeff - 81

An extremely complex nose that reminded me of wine because of its "grape" character, this Strathisla exploded onto the senses with olives, sponge cake, and clover. The best nose of the day (one man's view). The medium-weight body gave way to a hot, "shortish" finish, at times malty, at times oaky, but never boring, with beautiful caramel notes that weren't too sweet to drown-out the whisky. Nicely done.

Strathmill 12 Flora Fauna

Glen - 88

An exceptionally smooth and rich dram from the Flora Fauna range, this expression is a winner. A sherried whisky that's rich and flavorful without being overly sweet. The sherry was slightly more pronounced then I would have liked but this whisky is still very enjoyable. A very perfumed nose with ripe fruit and wine. I did pick up a slight hint of fish oil as well. The body is chewy and the finish is medium length smooth and dry. The Flora Fauna range seems to never disappoint.

Nose: Perfumed, over rip fruit, wine, malt, nutty, fish oil
Body: Chewy
Finish: Flavorful and starts big, mellows to a smooth dryness, medium length

Big and flavorful, Incredibly smooth.

A very sharp, spirity dram that comes off much to young. Filled with oak and grass and lacks that sweetness you'd expect from a Speyside. Water improved the nose slightly but ruined the body and finish. Not very smooth.

Nose: Very sharp, young and malty, grassy, spirity, musty, leather, honey and caramel

Body: Medium to thick, sharp
Sharp, a big burst and lingering, oak, some subtle smoke

Maybe over ice?

Brett - 83

A very grassy nose; young and musty, but with a definite maltiness that sets it off. There is also caramel, and a butterscotch sweetness, as well as hints of old leather. The 10 year old can be a bit bitey on the palate, but also has a surprisingly medium/thick body, as well as a verrrry long, lingering finish. Big and strong, the finish contains a whole "forest full" of oak, with varying degrees of smoke, black tea, and more caramel. This is a big, everyday type of whisky that can be enjoyed year-round.

This is a dram that improves immensely with water. I liked this whisky even though it still seemed a tad immature. Much smoother then the 10 year old and had a light wistful character.

Nose: Grassy, young, heather, caramel and honey
Body: Medium
Finish: Medium length, bitters, oak, has a leathery aftertaste

Pleasant with water.

Brett - 81

Dec, 2007
The 16 year old has a nose that we could only describe as "spirity". Full of old grasses and aldehyde, there are also hints of heather, sherry, and Tomintoul's trademark caramel. (Water really opens up the nose, exposing beautiful dried fruits and cinnamon.) A medium/light body segues into a finish that is both smoother and shorter than the 10 year old expression, with honey, toasted almonds, quinine, bitters, soft leather, and just the faintest, tiniest bit of peat (if at all). Though good, I wonder what a few more years in the cask would do to this dram.

Fruit salad anyone. Filled with overripe fruit with pears and apples in the nose and peaches in the finish. A unique perfumed nose. A fellow taster referred to it as a 'Bourbon light'. A very nice flavorful after dinner dram that was much better neat. Water removes the perfume and deadens the dram.

Nose: Perfumed, tons of overripe fruit (mostly pears and crushed apples), caramel, oak
Body: Very light
Medium: Short, lots of peach, vanilla, honey, very sweet

To borrow a quote from the Wiggles; 'fruit salad, yummy, yummy' (sorry I couldn't resist)

Brett - 87

Dec, 2007
Wow, what a nose! It is almost perfumed. Honestly. And though I'm not usually one for that sort of thing (preferring more of a "meaty" nose), this aroma is, pardon the obvious pun, intoxicating. Crisp and clean, the nose is also full of overripe pears and apples, as well as honey, light oak, and of course caramel. The very light body morphs into a short, sweet finish full of peaches, grapefruits, honey, vanilla, and light coffee. Very mellow. Though with different flavors, this dram reminded us of delicate bourbon, somehow. Truly the gentlest of the "gentle drams".

Aberfeldy is the heart of the popular Dewar blends but is not widely available as a single malt. It does appear that the distillery is on the verge of changing that with a new marketing push. I was very impressed with the 12 year old, and found it more enjoyable than the 21 year old. It has a heavy citrus nose, a light body and a very satisfying medium finish. At a price point of around $35 this one is a bargain that should do very well. It opened up nicely with just a touch of water.

Nose: Lemon grass with an under current of lemon oil, a touch of honey, pineapple, young but in a good way
Body: Light and a little oily
Finish: Sweet malty character that's medium length and very satisfying

A flavorful and easy drinking winner and one you should add to the collection.

A sophisticated malt that has a great balance of subtle yet competing flavors. Like many mature drams that haven't been finished in specialty woods, you have to spend some time nosing this one since the flavors are so subtle and complex. I picked up vanilla and sweet oak in the nose with a light under current of peat. The body was light and the finish medium and warming. I liked the 12 year old slightly more since the flavors are more pronounced but the 21 year old is a very different type of malt. Elegant and well balanced but the price (in the $150 range) seemed too high.

Nose: Very subtle with notes of vanilla, sweet oak, tannin and a light smokiness
Body: Coats the mouth, very flavorful
Finish: Medium length and warming, some spice

A special malt that Highland fans will love.

An ancient malt from the independent signatory line. This dram had a straight forward fruity character but it lacked the complexity I was expecting from such an old malt. The nose was the best part of the dram with hints of malt, honey and oak. The body was light and the finish was dry and smooth. You need to add water too this one since it's cask strength but I had a difficult time getting the proper amount right. Still for a dram this old it was well worth the journey.

Glenturret is one the oldest and smallest distilleries in Scotland and a good portion of its production ends up in the Famous Grouse. This Signatory bottling came off well balanced and had a very nice nose and sweet character. Had slight brine in the nose once you get past the initial sweetness. A little more complexity in the finish would have made the dram outstanding. The whisky came off a little sharp (which I like) and wasn't overly smooth. You don't see Glenturret that often and if you see this bottle you'd we wise to pick it up.

An incredible soft, buttery nose, full of sweet candy corn, seaweed, brine, ivy, and simple syrup. In fact, this Highland almost had "too much"; an overabundance of what's good. I loved it, but still felt assaulted. After the nose, this Glenturret seemed to behave a little more, with a beautiful, slightly oily, medium-weight mouthfeel. A very subtle and elegant dram that seems more mature then its 10 years. At times, I can't keep up this all of the specialty wood finishes from Glenmorangie. They were the pioneers in the process and helped start the current wood finish craze. I always found their whisky didn't need any 'dressing up' and prefer their traditional American Oak matured expressions. This ten year old is a light, flavorful treat that's an everyday type of whisky. Has some depth to compliment its light character with a nice bite in the finish to remind you that it still has some Highland attitude. Well put together.

Brett's Take: Beautifully vibrant and eye-opening, the nose is bursting with citrus (lemon, grapefruit), melons, hay, and custard. A young nose, but definitely not immature. A light sherried dram that still retains much of Glenmorangie's core flavor profile. Very appealing and a good honest malt for when you're in the mood for sherry but not in a heavy and oppressive way. Vibrant, clean and approachable.

Nose: Light, sherry, vibrant, raisins, crushed almonds, tangerines, honey
Body: Light and smooth
Finish: Long, oranges, malt and oak

A pretty dram.

This one starts out, quite obviously, nosing like good sherry vinegar; but beneath that there is the quintessential Glenmorangie lemony character, as well as cherries, raisins, spongecake, cinnamon, and toasted nuts. More fuller-bodied than The Original, it nevertheless seems to have a relatively short finish (a quick warm burst, and then it's gone). While it's there, though, it reveals more sherry character, oak, and a fruit mélange of melons and tart apples.

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban (port finish)

Oct, 2007
This is one of those drams that reminds me of why I love Single Malt Scotch. The tops of the new Glenmorangie line. This dram has a great nose, a vibrant body and long flavorful finish. I just loved it. The whole dram works. OK, I've heaped enough praise but try this as soon as possible!

Nose: Chocolate and orange candy, fresh and clean, toasted pecans, lemon, caramel, with an undercurrent of classic Glenmorangie
Body: Medium mouth feel, tingling
Finish: Lingering, flavorful, some heat, oak, rich chocolate

Almost the perfect dram.

Brett - 91

Wow! You know those chocolate oranges that pop-up everywhere at Christmastime? That's what fills your nose at the first whiff of Quinta Ruban. There are also raspberries, lemons, anise, fresh nuts, and Werther's Originals, but it's that rich chocolate that stays with you. Very full-bodied, with a long, smooth finish, leaving behind hints of bittersweet chocolate, toasted almonds, toasted oak, and anisette toasts. That's a lot of toast, but this whisky's jammin'. (Sorry, I couldn't resist).

Sophisticatedly light? Although I can appreciate the craftsmanship that went into this dram I came away wanting a little more. Almost too light and reminded me more of a Lowland malt.

Nose: Grassy, hay, light, citrus, lemon zest, a hint of charred oak, thin
Body: Light
Finish: Thin, medium length, oak, citrus, candy corn, dry

Pleasant.

Very crisp; this whisky noses younger than it is. There's lots of fruit in the nose, specifically green grapes, nectarines, and white grapefruits, as well as Karo syrup and hay. A very light body followed by an equally short finish, though there is a lot going on in it - candy corn, more grapefruit, lots of oak, a little must, milk chocolate, vanilla, and ginger. You can definitely sense the Sauternes.

A sophisticated and well but together dram that we found very enjoyable. A complex nose and heavy body gives way to a shorter but flavorful finish. The flavors just jump out at you. Definitely doesn't make you work to hard to unlock the drams secrets.

Nose: Oak, fresh and clean, vibrant, lemons, apples, nutmeg, nutty
Body: Chewy

Easy drinking and very enjoyable.

A fresh, clean, vibrant nose that is invigorating on the one hand, yet extremely subtle on the other, with oranges, lemons, new oak, nutmeg, and Hershey bars (with almonds). We found the nose very…relaxing. The 18 year old had a medium-to-light mouthfeel, with a soothing finish of apples, oranges, figs, mint, and those chocolate and caramel nut clusters. An exquisite and sublime whisky.

Glenmorangie 25 year old Quarter Century

Glen - 79

Updated Oct, 2007

Another example that all whiskies don't get better with age. I found this dram a little unbalanced. After getting passed a nice deep nose I was let down by a slightly bitter finish. Maybe I just expect more from older and more expensive drams.

Nose: Musty, deep, menthol, honey, fruit, dark chocolate, substantial
Body: Medium
Finish: Medium, oak, dry, some bite, a little bitter, cloves

A bit of a let down.

Brett - 81

Oct, 2007
At first honeyed and musty, the Quarter Century's nose eventually gives way to menthol, gauze, dandelion, chicory, a mix of citrus fruits, dried oysters, sweetened breakfast cereals, and baked ham. Quite the mix. At 25 years old, it's not surprising that the Quarter Century had a full-bodied, almost meaty, mouthfeel. Neither were we surprised by the quantity of dry oak in the finish, which also contained camphor, cloves (for the ham), and the essence of a field after a late harvest. Quite interesting.

A truly unique and incredible dram from the popular Glenmorangie Distillery. One
of the greatest whiskies I've ever had and one that's full of robust flavors.
The perfect specialty wood finished dram. This is a cask strength whisky but I found it nosed and tasted much better neat. The nose is amazing that starts
with a heavy port character but softens to a wonderful silky fudge and orange
zest. This one would be in my top ten if it was more widely available. Jeff recently secured a bottle of this great dram. I just have to get him to crack it.

Nose: Big, port, heavy wine character, burnt caramel, orange zest, tobacco,
malty, fudge
Body: Robust, smooth and chewy, oranges
Finish: Long and dry, peppery notes and orange zest

Outrageous!

Jeff - 98

This Whisky is one of the best my lips, nose and mouth have had the pleasure of such perfection! The best nose on a whisky that I've come across. It's almost like you walked into a bakery smelling fudge and chocolate cake and with a hint of sweet tobacco. Trust me You'll finish your glass and nose it for 30 minutes more.  The body is so smooth and rich with passion fruit and hints of wine with a dark chocolate lingering. It doesn't stop here, the finish is long with a slight peppery note that makes you savor every sip.

This whisky is in my Top 2

All I can say is thank you to Master Distiller Dr. Bill Lumsden, for not making a whisky but a work of art.

This is a tasty and flavorful dram from Duncan Taylor's high end Rarest of the Rare (ROR) series. As with all of the ROR, this is a now closed distillery and has become increasingly difficult to find.  A nice rich and complex nose greeted us, and we new instantly that we were in for a good night of tasting. Malt, sherry and vanilla are the most pronounced in the nose and give way to a thick body and warming long finish that starts out sharp and smoothes out nicely. The dram did come off a little unbalanced with the nose not following through to the finish, but that was my only complaint.

Nose: Malty, sherry, vanilla, honey, musk, earthy
Body: Thick
Finish Warming and long, some bite, malt, smoothes out.

A refined premium Old Pulteney, say it isn't so. What I love most about this Distillery from Wick is its blue collar sea port image. Their 12 year old is one of my favorite summertime drams that I like to bring on my annual pilgrimage to the Jersey Shore. Sea and salt is what I expected from this dram but what I got was fruit, coconut and vanilla. Gone is my beloved brine, but guess what, the dram is great and should appeal to a much wider audience than the 12 year old expression. Sweet with a great dry sharp finish makes this dram a winner.

I really thought I was in for a treat but I was a little let down by finish which was short and didn't compare to the 17 year old. Body: Light, oily
Finish: Short but lingering, warming

A good one!

Has a nice fresh nose and an elegant air to it. The body is very smooth, and goes down to easy. A little to grassy but with some nice peat. I with the finish wasn't so short, but it still a nice whisky. Add water to this whisky and sit back and enjoy.
